ABOUT BETHANIA BIO ─────

Better decisions start with better pathogen intelligence.

Bethania Bio brings together expertise in pathogen genomics, bioinformatics and public health to support organisations tackling infectious disease challenges.

We combine scientific understanding with practical insight to strengthen surveillance, preparedness and evidence-led decision-making.

Where we make the biggest difference.

OUR FOCUS AREAS ─────

We focus on the areas where pathogen intelligence can make a meaningful difference, from early detection and informed risk assessment to stronger preparedness and long-term resilience.

Pathogen surveillance and genomic intelligence: Supporting the interpretation of genomic and biological data for infectious disease surveillance.

Risk assessment and preparedness: Bringing scientific evidence together to inform risk assessment, prioritisation and preparedness.

Scientific and technical expertise: Addressing challenges in biological data, sequencing workflows and bioinformatics.

Cross-sector collaboration: Connecting scientific, technical and public-health perspectives across research and applied programmes.

The scientist behind
Bethania Bio.

Dr Irene Bassano | Founder & Director

Irene is a scientist and scientific adviser with over a decade of experience spanning genomics, bioinformatics, public health and research innovation.

She founded Bethania Bio to help bridge the gap between scientific expertise, technical capability and real-world public-health needs. Her experience across academic research and national public-health programmes has shown her the importance of connecting biological data, scientific interpretation and operational decision-making.

At the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Irene held technical leadership and subject-matter expert roles supporting national genomic surveillance and pandemic preparedness. Her experience includes work with the National Variant Assessment Platform (NVAP), supporting international laboratory networks, and the Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC), where she contributed to national COVID-19 surveillance and wastewater intelligence initiatives.

Her academic background includes translational research at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and Imperial College London, with experience spanning genomics, single-cell research, immunology and advanced biological technologies.

Bringing together scientific research, public-health experience and technical leadership, Irene established Bethania Bio as an independent platform for specialist scientific expertise, collaboration and innovation in pathogen intelligence.

Scientific expertise. Practical understanding.

Bethania Bio brings together scientific expertise and practical understanding to address complex challenges in biological data, pathogen surveillance and public health.

We work alongside organisations to understand their scientific and technical needs, identify opportunities and provide independent, evidence-led support.

Our approach is collaborative and proportionate. We focus on understanding the challenge first, then identifying the right expertise and support required to move a project forward.
